Between the NSA, Google, Facebook, and a few hundred advertisers, it's hard to know just who's tracking you, and where. Mozilla, the team behind the Firefox browser, just released a plug-in that lets you visualize the many trackers and cookies that dog your every step online — and it's pretty crazy.

Lightbeam, an extension for Firefox, keeps a record of all the sites that you visit, but also all the sites those sites call out to — from comment systems to video hosting services to dozens of advertisers and analytics services.

It presents all this info visually, with a web of icons representing who's connecting to whom, what sites have overlapping cookies and trackers, and so on.

We all know we're being tracked in some way or another, and expect sites to do it for their own purposes, but seeing it all in one place like this is sobering.

Just a few minutes into my day, and I'm on the radar of several dozen trackers already!

Of course, some are fairly innocuous things like Google Analytics or , but it's still quite a lot. You can run your cursor over the shapes to identify them, and click on one to reveal its location and who it's trading data with.

However, for the purposes of this article I had deliberately disabled my usual privacy plug-ins, AdBlock and Ghostery. After re-enabling them, I reset my Lightbeam data and visited the same sites again.

Amazing, isn't it? Note that not only are the websites I visited calling out to fewer other sites (and only legitimate ones at that), but there are no connections between the sites I visited — no overarching advertising service can collude with multiple websites and track me all across the web.

Let it build up data from a few days of browsing and you will likely be surprised at the number of connections to and among websites and services you've never heard of. Of course, all this data is confidential, unless you choose to share it with Mozilla — there's a big "contribute data" switch at the top right — although the idea of someone who uses a tool like this then voluntarily sharing that information is a bit absurd.

And, it must be said, this won't detect any deep data-diving being done by the likes of the NSA — that's not something that shows up in the browser.

1. Homepage - 'g h'
If you want to return straight to the home page, you don't have to scroll the cursor up to the home icon on the left. You can just press 'g h' on your keyboard and it will take you straight to your home Twitter feed.

2. Your profile - 'g p'
When you're surfing around on Twitter and find yourself seven degrees of separation away from your profile, press 'g p' and it will take you straight back to your profile.

3. Messages - 'g m'
The message icon can be hard to find on Twitter, so if you need to access your inbox, press 'g m' on your keyboard and it will take you straight there.
4. Connect - 'g c'
When you want to get to your list of interactions, just press 'g c' on the keyboard.
5. Mentions - 'g r'
To get to mentions you could then just click the tab on the left - but obviously the quicker shortcut would be to just type 'g r' and that will bring up any Tweets that mention you.
6. Users' profiles - 'g u'
To get to someone else's profile you don't have to browse the search box. Instead you can type 'g u' and a box will pop up saying: "Go to a person's profile." Just type in their name to jump to a profile.
7. New Tweet - 'n'
Wherever you are on the Twitter site, pressing 'n' on your keyboard will immediately pull up a 'What's happening?' box for you to type your Tweet into.
8. DM - 'm'
If you want to send a DM (direct message), press 'm' and a new direct message box will appear on your screen. You can then type in the recipient's Twitter handle and send your message.
9. Favourite - 'f'
If you come across a Tweet you want to favourite, simply pressing 'f' will favourite it for you. However - word of warning - this only works if you have opened up a new page for the Tweet. It won't work just on your homepage.
10. Retweet - 't'
Just as with favouriting a Tweet, you need to have the Tweet fully open to do this. Once you have it up, just press 't' and it will ask you if you want to retweet it to your followers.
11. Reply - 'r'
For those of you who were wondering why the code for retweeting is a 't', now you'll know why. The 'r' shortcut is reserved for replying to a Tweet. Again, make sure you have the Tweet open separately before you do this. If you press it whilst on the homepage, nothing will happen.
12. Next Tweet - 'j'
To move on to the next Tweet in a list, simply pressing 'j' will take you down to the next one and create a blue box around the Tweet.
13. Previous Tweet - 'k'
To go back to a previous Tweet, press 'k'.
14. Load more - '.'
If you have an old browser, or your Tweets are taking a while to load, pressing '.' will bring up the next set of Tweets for you, and take you straight to the top of your page.
15. Keyboard shortcuts - '?'
When in doubt of all these shortcuts, just typing in a question mark will bring up Twitter's hidden menu of all the keyboard shortcuts available.

Lady Gaga-inspired circle lenses or cat’s eye contacts might complete a Halloween look, but without a prescription, cosmetic lenses are illegal and can lead to eye infections or worse.
Federal law requires consumers to have a prescription from a licensed professional to obtain contact lenses, whether they are corrective or not. It’s illegal to sell cosmetic lenses, which the FDA monitors as medical devices, over-the-counter, said Nancy Manns, executive director of the Ohio Optical Dispensers Board.
Since mid-2012, the board’s investigator has served 15 businesses with cease and desist orders, warning them to stop selling cosmetic contacts. The businesses range from a Mexican grocery store in Defiance to a wig shop in Lima and a gas station in Columbus.
Most businesses stop after receiving a letter, but those that persist can face an injunction from the Ohio Attorney General’s Office and a fine, Manns said. With one investigator to review complaints about licenses in addition to roguecat-eye contacts, many businesses continue to sell lenses unchecked.
Without a prescription, the contacts can be dangerous. Using lenses not properly fitted to an eye can cause pain, infection, cornea ulcers and blindness, said Sherry Williams, president and CEO of Prevent Blindness Ohio.
Popular among teenagers and during Halloween, the lenses can cause irrevocable harm within a few hours, Williams said. Across the U.S., an estimated 200 people each year develop serious eye infections that warrant surgery because of improper use of contacts, according to Prevent Blindness Ohio.
“No amount of time is a safe amount of time to wear a black-market contact,” Williams said. “When you’re 13, 14 or 16 and having a corneal transplant, your visual quality is going to be impacted for life.”
Most cosmetic contact lenses are approved for use if obtained through an eye doctor. One exception is circle lenses, popularized by Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance” music video because the FDA has not approved them for use.
“I’m certain (Lady Gaga) had no clue, but certainly children don’t understand that, and they want to emulate the celebrity,” Williams said.

For all of the talk about the internet erasing national borders and spanning the world, its domain names are, mostly, still Romanized. The presence of language-specific scripts expanded a little more on Wednesday when ICANN, the organization that sets domain name standards like “.com” and “.org,” decided to throw four new suffixes into the mix: شبكة, онлайн, сайт, 游戏. That’s Arabic for “web,” Cyrillic for “online” and “site,” and Chinese for “game.”

Akram Atallah, president of ICANN’s Generic Domains Division, called it “the biggest change to the Internet since its inception,” a dramatic claim to stake on four little suffixes. On the other hand, it marks the beginning of a gradual expansion of the naming system, from 22 English-denominated names to a projected 1,400 multilingual names. The worldwide web is about to sound a little more worldly.

Trip To San Diego - Nokia World Reveals Phablets And Tablets In Abu Dhabi

Trip To San Diego
The Windows Phone handsets introduce the ability to change which objects in a photo are in focus after it is taken.

The Windows RT tablet has a 4G data chip, unlike Microsoft's recently announced Surface 2.

Nokia World in Abu Dhabi is likely to be remembered as the Finnish firm's last major event before it completes the sale of its hardware unit.

Microsoft agreed to buy the business for 5.4bn euros ($7.4bn; £4.6bn) in a deal which the companies have said should be finalised by early 2014.

One analyst said the sale should aid the US firm's efforts to promote its mobile platforms against the market leaders, Android and iOS.

"For the last two years Microsoft and Nokia's marketing efforts have jarred against each other at times - having one big effort should be better than two smaller ones," said Martin Garner, from the consultancy CCS Insight.

"Microsoft can also spend a lot more marketing the devices than Nokia could. That does seem to be a key criteria - both Samsung and Apple's spends are very high indeed."

Microsoft's share of the handset and tablet markets is growing but from a relatively low level, according to market research firm Gartner.

Windows Phone took a 3.3% share of smartphone sales in the April-to-June quarter, said the firm, with Nokia proving the most popular brand.

It also forecast that about 1.7% of all tablets shipped over 2013 as a whole would be powered by either Windows RT or the full Windows 8 operating system.

Big phones
Nokia showed off two phablets at the UAE launch. Both the Lumia 1520 and Lumia 1320 feature 6in (15.2cm) displays, allowing extra rows of apps to be displayed on their home screens than possible on smaller models.

The firm said that the extra space would also make it easier to use the phones' touchscreen keyboards, suggesting this would appeal to business users who used productivity software.

Nokia added that the inclusion of four microphones in the higher-end 1520 should appeal to consumers interested in making recordings of school concerts and other events with multiple sources of sound.

In addition, a new Beamer app will allow the phones to stream the contents of their screens onto to a web browser on a separate display. It works by sending data via Nokia's computer servers.

Another new app - Refocus - lets owners determine which parts of a photograph are in focus and which are blurred after it is taken. The phones achieve this by taking a series of images in quick succession at different focus lengths rather than replicating the light field effect captured by a Lytro camera.

Blackberry is among the other companies to have recently launched a phablet, but one expert said doubts about the Canadian firm's future meant that its existing users might be tempted to switch.

"There's definitely a chance for Nokia to gain ground, of course everyone else is interested in that space too," said Mr Garner.

"It's not a slam dunk, but Microsoft is as well placed as others - better in some respects."

First tablet
The Lumia 2520 becomes the only Windows RT tablet made by a manufacturer other than Microsoft.

Dell, Asus, Lenovo, Acer and Samsung had all initially backed the platform only to later change tack.

The operating system runs on an ARM-based chip allowing it to offer superior battery life to the full Windows 8 system running on tablets powered by x86 processors, but it does not support as many programs.

Nokia's tablet is slightly more compact than Microsoft's version and also distinguishes itself by supporting an optional 4G Sim card.

However, bearing in mind Microsoft has already taken a $900m writedown after weak sales of its original Surface RT tablet, one analyst questioned whether the firm would want to produce two competing models.
"I don't think that having two devices in that space makes a lot of sense," said Carolina Milanesi, consumer devices analyst at Gartner.

"I believe Microsoft may keep the Nokia model on as a cheaper consumer-targeted device focused on media consumption and gaming in order to capture more market share, and also keep on the more expensive Intel-based Surface Pro - but it will phase out the Surface 2 RT model."

Place To Visit In San Diego - Test Your Phone's Mettle With Benchmark & Tuning

Place To Visit In San Diego
Here's a novel way to find out if you do indeed need a new phone. It's a benchmarking app that will test components and provide a comparison with crowdsourced benchmarks from other common devices out there.

If your 2-year-old, or so, phone or tablet seems a bit sluggish compared with the speed at which your colleagues and friends whizz through their smartphone-related tasks, the answer is that it probably is.

As we know, devices are frankly dinosaurs at a year old, and this app will conveniently prove it so that you can comfortably go to the store and buy a new device -- guilt free and with no spousal recriminations. After all, you have documented evidence. How's that for $2.99?

Benchmark & Tuning is actually a geek's dream because it tests the phone's CPU along with memory and input/output capabilities -- your device's power, in other words.

If you ever dreamed of being as a space rocket engineer, surrounded by dials and meters in the lab, calculating optimum thrusts and so on, this will do for you the same thing, but it's for us, the smartphone wielding proletariat.

The Features
Benchmark & Tuning (Full) works by crowdsourcing benchmark comparisons. This means comparison data comes from fellow users, rather than from possibly inflated benchmarking stats from phone marketing departments.

There's been a flurry of accusations aimed at phone makers in the media recently. Suggestions are that their numbers are inflated. The use of this app for comparisons means that you're not using that dubious, and conceivably rigged, data.

The second key feature is that rooted users can set a governor too. Rooting is a process that Android enthusiasts use to gain control over the operating system. Ordinarily, you'd need two apps to do all this. One app for benchmarking, and one for tuning.

Test Results

I had a blast playing with the app and was delighted to find that all of the devices I tested performed poorly. This means that I'm gathering ammunition for eventual upgrades cross-gadgets.

Unfortunately, because I, along with vast numbers of other U.S. consumers, have moved over to a prepaid smartphone plan -- I'm using Sprint MVNO Ting in the city and Verizon Prepay in rural areas -- I don't have the benefit of subsidized handsets anymore.

It's no longer a case of waiting for a two-year upgrade and automatically getting the latest, fastest phone. It's now a two-to-three year, or maybe longer full-cost proposition, so it involves some thought and research. This app fits the arsenal nicely.

I tested three of my devices. One device, a Motorola Photon 4G, came in 19th out of 25 overall; a Toshiba tablet came in 15th; and a cheap Galaxy Y miniphone came in at a super-bad 23rd. The Galaxy Y was purchased to function as a wireless hotspot only, so I expected lame results. However, I was quite surprised about the poor performance of my other devices.

If you're interested, as of the day I tested, the HTC One S came in first overall, Samsung's Galaxy SIII second and the Asus Transformer Prime TF201 third.

A Must-Have

This being a geek's plaything, you'll see when you run tests that some stock devices have been reported with better this-than-that -- processor power than memory, for example.

Interestingly, the top seven -- which included the HTC One X, 5.3-inch Samsung Galaxy Note N7000 and two 7-inch Samsung Galaxy Tabs -- all had roughly the same I/O results.

All the same performance in the real world?
Peculiarly, there wasn't a Samsung Galaxy S IV result on the list. The S IV is Samsung's latest and greatest. I don't know why it was omitted, but it skewed the results somewhat.

Overall, though, this app is a must-have if you're contemplating a new-phone investment and don't trust the manufacturer's numbers.

Want to Suggest an Android App for Review?

Is there an Android app you'd like to suggest for review? Something you think other Android users would love to know about? Something you find intriguing but aren't sure it's worth your time or money?

SeaWorld San Diego - Apple, Google, Facebook Don't Pay The Highest Engineer Salary

For software engineers, life must seem like it keeps getting better. Not only are salaries on the rise as companies compete for talent, but there are also lively job markets in cities across the US.

While big-name companies, like Google, Apple, and Facebook, tout their engineers as the best and the brightest, these tech giants aren't necessarily paying the most (although they're up there).

A new survey by Glassdoor, released Thursday, lists the top 25 companies that have paid their engineers the highest salaries over the last year. And the unlikely winner is Juniper Networks. Paying $159,990 for its software engineers' average base salary, Juniper is way ahead of other companies on the list.

Coming in No. 2 is LinkedIn, which pays its software engineers $136,427, and No. 3 is Yahoo paying $130,312. Google and Twitter make up No. 4 and No. 5 on the list, respectively, paying $127,143 and $124,863. Apple is No. 6, and Facebook is No. 9.

While people may balk that some of the heavy hitters aren't reaching the top of the list, it's important to note that all of the companies in the top 25 pay above the national annual average, which is $92,790.

These 2013 salaries are quite a bit higher than the numbers released by Glassdoor last year. In 2012, Google earned the top spot, paying its engineers $128,336 (which is actually $1,193 more than this year). Coming in second was Facebook paying $123,626.

Third and fourth place went to Apple and eBay last year. While they dropped in the rankings, both companies are paying more this year than last year -- Apple is paying $10,217 more, and eBay is paying $5,911 more. Zynga, which was No. 5 last year, didn't even make the top 25 list this year.

In this year's survey, Glassdoor also took a look at the average software engineer salary in major cities across the US. Not surprisingly, the San Francisco Bay Area ranks No. 1 with the average base pay at $111,885. A couple of other cities, like Seattle and San Diego, also have above average salaries.

Glassdoor's survey is based on companies that had at least 50 software engineer salary reports filed over the last 12 months. In all, more than 33,000 salary reports were turned into Glassdoor this year.

It is not necessarily more effective to exercise longer, as the aim is to achieve muscle fatigue and not muscle failure, said Prof Tong. Lengthy sessions may, in fact, increase the risk of injuries.

While doing the exercises, avoid holding your breath, but maintain regular breathing, exhaling when exerting yourself and inhaling when relaxing.

Make the movements slow and deliberate, with control, but avoid gripping the weights too tightly which may cause an excessive rise in blood pressure.

Stop the exercises at once if you have shortness of breath, giddiness, light-headedness, palpitations and chest tightness or pain while at rest and consult your cardiologist or primary physician, said Prof Tong.

Stretching exercises are also suitable for heart patients, but avoid raising the arms for prolonged periods and stretching the chest if open heart surgery was done recently (less than five to eight weeks).

Stretching exercises are also good for warming up and cooling down.

Ms Loke Shi Jia, senior physiotherapist in charge of the cardiac rehabilitation programme at CGH, said: "Stretching the arms and legs before and after exercise helps prepare the muscles for activity and prevent injury and muscle strain."

Regular stretching also increases your range of motion, flexibility and muscle function, she added.

Balboa Park San Diego - Samsung Touching Up ROUNDED, CURVY Plastic Enhanced MODEL

Samsung has launched what it describes as the "world's first curved display smartphone", the Galaxy Round.
This is despite the fact that Samsung built the last phone with a curved screen only three years ago.
You can't get your hands on one yet, though – the new handset, which has a flexible 5.7-inch high-def display, is only available in South Korea.
The first curved phone, of course, was the Nexus S, and was described as "contoured" with a glass screen bowing lengthways to wrap towards the user's mouth like an EU-Approved banana*, while the Galaxy Round wraps sideways to provide no discernible utility at all.
Samsung's press release says very little about the hardware, beyond the fact that the Galaxy Round seems to be a variant in the Galaxy Note with a couple of new functions added to take advantage of the curved back. Most importantly, it doesn't say from what material the new screen is constructed.
The Nexus S used a glass screen, curved, but the Round's camber is much sharper and would seem to indicate the use of plastic which might justify the "world's first" tag.
Just yesterday, LG announced that it had started manufacturing screens based on plastic, which can be flexible but more usefully are fixed to curved surfaces, and Samsung has been playing with the technology recently too, making plastic the probable basis for the Galaxy Round.
That makes the product a proof-of-concept, unlikely to sell outside Korea and unlikely to sell in any significant quantities within it, but it will serve to prove that Samsung can make plastic screens, in large quantities and with a yield rate high enough to make the technology viable, which is what the Galaxy Round is really all about.

Attractions In San Diego - Yahoo's Email Becomes More Like Gmail In Redesign

Yahoo's free email service is becoming a bit more like Google's Gmail as part of its second makeover in less than a year.

The similarities to Gmail probably aren't coincidental. Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer helped design some of Gmail's features while she was a top executive at Google Inc. Since its debut nearly a decade ago, Gmail has grown into the world's most popular email service.

Yahoo's redesigned email unveiled Tuesday includes a Gmail-like tool that will thread together emails related to specific topics so they appear as a succession of messages. The "conversation view" has become a widely used email feature since Gmail helped popularize the concept after it embraced the format in 2004.

Users can turn off Yahoo's new conversational tool if they want.

Another new feature will enable Yahoo's email users to decorate their inboxes with a selection of scenic pictures plucked from the company's photo-sharing service, Flickr. Gmail has been allowing its users to spruce up their inboxes with various themes for years.

When Yahoo's email users choose a picture as their backdrop, the same look will automatically appear on the mobile email applications that the company is modifying as part of the redesign. The updated apps are for Android devices, Apple Inc.'s iPhone and iPad and tablets running on Microsoft Corp.'s Windows 8 operating system.

In another change, Yahoo is now promising each email account a maximum of one terabyte, or about 1,000 gigabytes, of storage. The Sunnyvale, Calif., company says that amount should be enough to cover the storage needs of its average email user for about 6,000 years. Yahoo Inc. had previously promised its email users that they would never run out of storage, but it hadn't established a specific limit.

Gmail vastly expanded the capacity of email boxes in 2004 when it rolled out its service with a limit of one gigabyte per account. At the time, industry-leading email services run by Yahoo and Microsoft Corp. were limiting storage on their free accounts to 25 megabytes or even less.

Yahoo's terabyte limit now dwarves Gmail, which has a per-account limit of 15 gigabytes that also includes material kept on Google's Drive and Photo Plus services.

Since defecting from Google 15 months ago, Mayer has been revamping many of Yahoo's services in an attempt to attract more Web surfers and bring in more revenue from ads. Yahoo's ad sales remain lackluster at a time Google and Facebook Inc. are enjoying strong growth, but Mayer says the number of monthly visitors to the company's services has increased by 20 percent to 800 million people since her arrival.

Yahoo's last major overhaul of its email service occurred in December. The company now has about 289 million monthly users worldwide, second only to Gmail at 304 million, according to the most recent data from the research firm comScore Inc.

Hotels San Diego Downtown - Look Away! Eye Contact Not Always Best In Business

Most workers think it is important to make eye contact while talking in a meeting or job interview, but they might be surprised at the reaction they get when they do, new research finds.

Even though making eye contact has long been considered an effective way of drawing in a listener and getting him or her to see a point of view, it may actually make people more resistant to persuasion, especially when they already disagree, the study discovered.

"There is a lot of cultural lore about the power of eye contact as an influence tool," said lead researcher Frances Chen, of the University of British Columbia, who conducted the studies while at the University of Freiburg in Germany. "But our findings show that direct eye contact makes skeptical listeners less likely to change their minds — not more, as previously believed."

As part of the study, researchers analyzed participants using recently developed eye-tracking technology. They found that the more time participants spent looking at a speaker's eyes while watching a video, the less persuaded they were by the speaker's argument.

Overall, spending more time looking at the speaker's eyes was only associated with greater receptiveness to the speaker's opinion among those who already agreed with the speaker's opinion on that issue, according to the researchers.

In a second experiment, the study's authors found that participants were more likely to find speakers convincing when they focused on their mouths rather than on their eyes.

Julia Minson, of the Harvard Kennedy School of Government and co-lead researcher of the study, said the findings highlight the fact that eye contact can signal very different messages depending on the situation. While eye contact may be a sign of connection or trust in friendly situations, it's more likely to be associated with dominance or intimidation in adversarial circumstances, she said.

"Whether you're a politician or a parent, it might be helpful to keep in mind that trying to maintain eye contact may backfire if you're trying to convince someone who has a different set of beliefs than you," Minson said.

The study, co-authored by Maren Schöne and Markus Heinrichs of the University of Freiburg, was recently published in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science.

Just as nobody likes a whiner, nobody likes bad breath. It's a powerful way to make a bad first impression. But the good news is that there are relatively simple ways to take care of halitosis.

Much of the time, bad breath comes from the gases produced by bacteria accumulating in the mouth, on the gums, teeth and tongue, said Dr. Jeffrey Spiegel, an otolaryngologist in Boston. Many of these gases contain sulfur, which gives them their stinky smell.

A simple and obvious way to treat this is to brush your teeth and floss. Tongue scrapers can also go a long way toward removing bacteria that cake onto the back of your tongue, Spiegel told LiveScience.

Here are five other, more surprising ways to fight bad breath

1. Visit your dentist
If you have lingering bad breath, it's not a bad idea to visit your dentist, said Chetan Kaher, a dentist in London. Once certain types of bacteria set up shop on your teeth, they can form a plague that has to be physically removed by professionals, Kaher said.

These plagues can break down teeth, not only causing cavities but also creating bad breath odors, he said. Halitosis can also be caused by cavities themselves and rotten teeth, so it's important to rule out these possibilities by visiting the dentist, Spiegel said.

2. Check your nose
Another leading cause of bad breath: smelly secretions from your nasal passages. Sinus infections, or the presence of bacteria in your nose and sinus cavities, may also give off noxious odors

Using a saline nasal wash can help alleviate this problem, Spiegel said. But it the problem continues, it's a good idea to see an ear, nose and throat specialist, he added.

3. Tonsil stones?
The tonsils – which are globs of lymph tissue in the back of the throat -- aren't exactly smooth and round like gumballs, Kaher said. "Instead, they look like prunes, with crevices where bacteria can accumulate."

Occasionally, if enough microbes and debris get caught, they can form tonsil stones (or tonsilloliths). Both Kaher and Spiegel said that these can be quite smelly, and can definitely contribute to halitosis.

Tonsil stones can be removed using a device called Waterpik, which squirts pressurized water onto the tonsils. But if tonsils are large enough, and are constantly accumulating stones, they may need to be removed, Spiegel said.

"Sometimes we even have to remove people's tonsils because their breath was that bad," Spiegel said.

4. Watch your diet
Foods like garlic and onions can cause bad breath, but not just because their remnants accumulate in your mouth. In the case of garlic, for example, chemicals from the food are taken up by blood cells and expelled through your lungs, Spiegel said.

Thus, your actual breath smells, and not just your mouth. In that case, there's "nothing you can do except wait it out, mask it with breath mints or mouthwash, or avoid the food," he said.

5. Check your stomach, see the doctor
If none of the above causes your bad breath, or if bad breath is a persistent problem, it's a good idea to see your doctor, Spiegel said. In some cases, stomach problems can also cause bad breath.

The main way  the stomach can cause bad breath is through acid reflux, a condition in which acid and other contents of your stomach leak up out of the organ, into the esophagus. These can be treated with antacids and other medications, Spiegel said.

Apple's new iPhone may have caused queues in New York, Berlin, Beijing and London but over in Russia the streets were bare with no official release date of the company's latest smartphone expected until November, according to local media reports.

This delay highlights how the U.S. tech giant is faring in Russia, with falling market share and major carriers turning their backs on the smartphones.

Alexey Kornya, the chief financial officer of Russia's biggest mobile service provider MTS, told CNBC that the company is focusing on cheap smartphones as demand for iPhones is low.

"They are not subsidizing in Russia," he said. "You have to pay in full, that is why there is very limited demand for non-subsidized expensive phones and that is why we are moving more focus on cheap smartphones."

An iPhone in Russia could cost over $1000, he said, adding that the bestselling smartphone sold by MTS in the last two months was just $60.

"High-end smartphones like Apple, Samsung of course they are important but they are not much in quantity because we are not subsidizing," he said.

Smartphone shipments were set to grow by over 30 percent this year according to research firm Canalys, but at the same time Apple's market share has contracted in the country.
MTS, as well as Russia's two other to mobile operators - Megafon and Vimpelcom -- have stopped selling the iPhone since reaching a deal back in 2008.

Pete Cunningham, a mobile analyst at Canalys told CNBC that price is certainly a factor in Russia and consumers favored lower-cost Android phones.

But Cunningham said that he wouldn't say the company was failing in Russia, with expectations that the new iPhone 5S sold very well in unofficial trading channels, known as the grey market.

Apple Inc will be unable to widely roll out a new version of the iPad Mini with a high-resolution "retina" display this month, people who work in the company's supply chain said, leaving the gadget without the sharper screen found on rival tablets from Google Inc and Amazon.com Inc.
Apple's supply chain is only now gearing up to make retina displays for the iPad Mini, which means the gadgets could be available in only limited quantities this year, if at all, and the company may miss the chance to cash in on the year-end holiday shopping season, the sources said.
Cupertino, California-based Apple has come under pressure to preserve market share and bolster sales against rivals that are rapidly raising specifications and lowering prices.
It remains unclear exactly what new features and modifications could find their way into the next iPad Mini, which the sources said was due to be unveiled this month.
But higher-resolution screens and cameras, as well as thinner and lighter dimensions, are among the improvements users have come to expect with updated smartphones and tablets.
"If they don't put in retina ... there will be howls," said Frank Gillett, an analyst with Forrester.
Apple declined to comment about any product launches and the sources at companies in Apple's supply chain declined to be identified due to the confidentiality of the matter.
DISPLAY DISAPPOINTMENT
Apple defines retina display as resolution that is detailed enough that the human eye can't detect pixelation.
The feature is available on some full-sized iPads, and similar resolutions are available on iPad Mini competitors such as Google's Nexus 7, as well as Amazon's seven-inch Kindle Fire HDX due to go on sale this month.
The reason behind the delays in manufacturing the retina display screens for the iPad Mini were unclear. One source at a supplier said there were delays in Apple's certification of panel producers, which were given strict power-saving requirements.
LG Display Co Ltd, Samsung Electronics Co Ltd's display unit and Sharp Corp all vied to manufacture the panels, supply chain sources said.
The three display makers declined to comment.
Given the time required to ramp up screen production, a retina display-equipped iPad Mini would not be available in large volumes until early next year, the sources said.
The sources expected Apple to either wait until early next year for a full-fledged launch of a retina display iPad Mini, or to make a retina version only available in limited quantities before the end of the year.
Apple has also told suppliers to reduce costs, two of the sources said, with one person saying the U.S. firm is looking at rolling out an iPad Mini with a smaller 8 gigabytes of memory.
Less memory may allow Apple to lower the price of the Mini to boost sales in emerging markets like China where cheaper tablets, many of them running Google's Android operating system, are gaining market share.
"Right now the iPad Mini is more expensive than everyone else in the 7- to 8-inch tablet segment," said Arthur Liao, an analyst for Fubon Securities in Taipei. "If it could reduce its price by even just $50, it would appeal to more consumers."
The iPad's total market share almost halved to 32.5 percent in the second quarter from a year ago, while Android devices, including Samsung's Galaxy series, gained nearly a quarter to 62.6 percent, a survey by tech research company IDC showed.
Amazon's new 7-inch Kindle Fire is priced from $229 for 16GB wifi-only models, while Google's second-generation Nexus 7 offers a similar screen size and storage capacity at the same price. By comparison, the cheapest model in Apple's current 7.9-inch iPad Mini lineup with 16GB storage size starts at $329.
Anyone expecting Apple to dramatically cut prices is likely to be disappointed, analysts said, pointing to the higher-than-expected price tag for the iPhone 5C unveiled this month.
"Don't expect the prices to be significantly lower," said one of the sources. "Even though Apple aims to cut down on component costs, it still ends up around the same as the current Mini because the new Mini will have upgraded specifications."

A commonly used blood pressure drug could help fight cancer by opening up blood vessels in solid tumours.
Used beside conventional cancer-fighting drugs, it could improve life expectancy, experts believe.

Following successful testing in mice, doctors plan to give losartan to patients with pancreatic cancer to see if it can tackle this hard-to-treat disease, Nature Communications reports.

Currently, only 5% of pancreatic cancer patients survive for at least 5 years.

This is partly because only one in 10 people with the disease has a tumour that is operable.
Future hope
Investigators at the Massachusetts General Hospital in the US are currently recruiting volunteer patients with inoperable pancreatic cancer to test out the new drug combination of chemotherapy plus losartan.

Although the treatment will not cure them, the researchers hope it will give the patients more months or years of life than they might otherwise get.

Losartan has been used for more than a decade as a safe blood pressure medication.

It works by making the blood vessels relax or dilate so that they can carry more blood, easing pressure.

The Massachusetts team found that the drug was beneficial in mice with breast and pancreatic cancer.

It improved blood flow in and around the tumours allowing more of the chemotherapy drugs to be delivered to their target.

Mice given this treatment, rather than standard chemotherapy alone, survived for longer.

Dr Emma Smith of Cancer Research UK said: "This interesting study in mice sheds light on why drugs for hypertension might improve the effectiveness of chemotherapy, but we don't yet know if they work exactly the same way in people.

"The fact that these drugs are already widely used to treat high blood pressure will hopefully cut down the amount of time it will take to test their potential in treating cancer but they may not be safe for all patients or when combined with other cancer treatments, so we need to wait for the answers from clinical trials which are already under way."

The iPhone launch has come and gone, so naturally, it's time for the iPad rumors to begin. To get things started, Chinese parts supplier sw-box.com this week posted a video of what it says is the shell for the next iPad.
As noted by MacRumors, the almost six-minute video (below) shows off the shell of what the narrator calls the iPad 5 next to the 4th-gen iPad and the iPad mini.

The most noticeable difference is the size. The iPad 5 comes in at 241.2 mm high as compared to 239.2mm for the 4th-gen iPad, whereas the iPad 5 is 169.5mm wide and the 4th-gen is 185.7mm, according to the video.

The narrator also noted a few other differences between the tablets, including a speaker on the center bottom of the iPad 5 and a mirrored logo, much like the iPad mini. There's also two separate volume buttons on the iPad 5 rather than one, and an extra microphone on the back of the device.

As the video noted, the iPad 5 seems to take a page from the iPad mini with its rounded design, which might make it easier to grip for longer periods of time.

Apple has not yet made any announcements about its iPad lineup, though rumors suggest that Cupertino will hold an iPad launch event in mid to late October as it did last year.
